How does the Bowen Island ferry commute actually work?

The Wednesday 9:20 am sailing from Horseshoe Bay carries dangerous goods only and takes no passengers. On the Fridays falling on 25 December and 1 January there is no 5:45 am or 6:50 am sailing.

The 5:15 am from Snug Cove does not run on statutory-holiday Mondays or on 25 December and 1 January. The Wednesday 1:55 pm sailing carries dangerous goods only.

What does the ferry cost?

Here is the part people get wrong: fares on this route include return-trip travel and are collected only on the way to Bowen Island. Leaving the island is free, and no proof of payment is asked for. Rates below are effective June 16, 2026 (BC Ferries fare index, version 26-05).

At 20 round trips a month, that is $960 by car at the standard fare or about $625 with an Experience Card; walking on costs $249 a month standard, or $155 with the card. The card's purchase price and top-up rules could not be verified here — the BC Ferries product page returned an error on September 4, 2026 — so check the current terms at bcferries.com before you buy one.

There are no reservations. What does that mean in practice?

No reservations on this route. Boarding is by order of arrival. Ticket sales and check-in close 10 minutes before departure at Horseshoe Bay and 2 minutes before at Snug Cove. Boarding by order of arrival is the whole system: at quiet times you drive on ten minutes before the horn; at busy times the moment you join the queue decides your sailing. We have no verified figure for how often sailings fill, so we will not guess at one. Look before you leave instead: BC Ferries publishes live departure status and vehicle space on its current conditions page, and islanders watch it out of habit.

Commuting without a car

From the Horseshoe Bay terminal, West Vancouver Blue Bus routes 250 Horseshoe Bay and 257 Horseshoe Bay Express run to downtown Vancouver. On Bowen Island itself, TransLink community bus route 280 Bluewater runs from Snug Cove along the west side of the island; routes 281 Eagle Cliff and 282 Mt. Gardner serve the east side and weekends respectively. Buses generally meet the ferry.

Nearest island stop: Windjammer Rd at Arbutus Point Rd, route 280 Bluewater - about 715 m by road from the Hayes Road / Joan Audrey Lane entrance and about 950 m from 774 Hayes Road. Open-source stop data on Bowen is sparse, so confirm it with TransLink.

Bowen Van Pool runs a weekday service to UBC via downtown Vancouver, departing 6:20 am with an assured 5:45 pm return loading. Bowen LIFT is a ride-sharing programme along the main routes. Compass Cards are accepted on the island buses with 90-minute transfers.

Water taxi. Cormorant Marine (Cormorant Water Taxi), 604-250-2630, operates foot-passenger water taxi service to Bowen Island by charter. Its online booking covers scheduled runs to Gambier-area destinations; Bowen and other destinations are charter bookings by phone. Useful for a missed last sailing or a chartered group crossing; not a scheduled commuter alternative to the ferry.

A typical commuting day

Distances first. Snug Cove to the Hayes Road entrance is 9.4 km, about 19 minutes by road. Horseshoe Bay to downtown Vancouver is about 26 minutes in free-flowing traffic, to Park Royal about 18 minutes, to Vancouver International Airport about 49 minutes. Peak-hour Highway 1 is slower than any of those.

A weekday that starts at a desk downtown at nine looks like this. Leave the house at 6:55 am and you are at Snug Cove by about 7:15 for the 7:30 am sailing, with time to buy a coffee since check-in at Snug Cove closes two minutes before departure. Alongside at Horseshoe Bay at 7:50, off the ramp by about 7:55, downtown between 8:20 and 8:45 depending on the bridge. Coming home, the 4:40 pm from Snug Cove is the school-run boat and the 6:00 pm is the commuter boat; leaving downtown at about 5:00 pm puts you on the 6:00 pm, into Snug Cove at 6:20 and home by about 6:40.

Roughly 75 to 95 minutes door to door from the lots to downtown Vancouver: about 20 minutes to Snug Cove, a 20-minute crossing, about 26 minutes of driving from Horseshoe Bay, plus ferry loading and wait time. Miss a sailing and you wait roughly an hour, which is the real difference between this and a bridge. People who do it daily stop counting the wait as lost time and start treating the crossing as twenty minutes nobody can interrupt.

The honest downsides

• The last boat is the last boat. 11:00 pm from Horseshoe Bay, 11:30 pm from Snug Cove. A late dinner in town becomes a decision, and a missed sailing becomes a hotel or a water taxi.
• Two sailings a week carry no passengers. The Wednesday 9:20 am from Horseshoe Bay and the Wednesday 1:55 pm from Snug Cove are dangerous-goods runs.
• Boarding order, not booking. There is no way to guarantee a place on a particular sailing, so plan the journey around the sailing before the one you need when it matters.
• Weather and mechanical disruption happen. No verified cancellation rate was found, so none is published here. Check current conditions rather than an average.
• Every errand is a round trip. Trades, deliveries and big-box shopping all cross the water, which is also why building here costs more.

What to do next

Ride it before you decide. Take the 8:05 am over on a weekday, walk the lots, and come back on the 3:15 pm; you will have felt the whole rhythm in an afternoon. Tours run by appointment and take about two hours including the crossing.
